I PROMISE
Squall walked back into the spaceship alone, sat in the seat with his hands covering his face. He finally didn’t keep her, he thought he had no right to stop her, which was just the very reason that made him upset. They had just been together for a short while and then he lost her again…his personality doomed that he’d never catch his happiness. However, things would change…
Later, companions came up and were glad to see he was safe.
“So where’s the princess that changed the ever-cautious, Squall?” asked Quistis.
“Rinoa…she’s sorceress now, she received the powers. An escort in Esthar came to pick her up, she’s in Esthar now.”
“…Was she taken by force?”
“No, it was her decision, she was scared about being a sorceress…scared of being feared, hated…scared that no one would want to be around her. She said she couldn’t handle that.”
“Then did you try to stop her, Squall?” ask Quistis.
“It was her decision, what right do I have to object?” he disputed.
“Oh, stop that! What are you talking about?!” shouted Quistis,” why did you go all the way out into space to save Rinoa? To hand her over to Esthar? So that you might never see her again?! Wasn’t it because you wanted to be with her?! You’re a fool!!”
“Seriously.” Added Zell.
“A fool? Maybe,” he thought,” what the hell am I doing? The only thing I know is Rinoa, the only thing I want to do for sure right now is for Rinoa…what do I hesitate about?!”
“We’re going to get her back!” said him. They piloted the spaceship to Esthar immediately.
In the Sorceress Memorial, they saw Rinoa locked in a huge transparent cover. The escort tried to stop them but, of course, it was useless.” I’m here to do what I should have done earlier, I’m taking Rinoa!” said him and forced in.
Stood in front of the equipment, Squall pulled out her gunblade and cut down the wires that were used to lock the cover. Immediately the white steam was released, the cover opened. Rinoa fell off the equipment and threw herself towards Squall, he caught her and held her tightly in his arms, as if she’d disappear as soon as he let go…
“Squall, don’t. I’m a sorceress now. ” She said.
“I don’t care.” He answered.
They left Esthar right away and got to the Good-hope corner at the southern earth, where was a wonderful and quiet place with sunshine, ocean, sea breeze, and a large flower field. The sea breeze blew lightly across the flower field, and caused the flowers surging like waves.
When there were only two of them standing there, watching the flowers field, she asked,” What’ll become of me?”
“Don’t worry about that, there’ve been many good sorceresses…”
“But I can’t guarantee anything. If Ultimecia possesses me again…you saw me, she controlled me in outer space and make me break Adel’s seal. What might happen next time? What will I end up doing? Will I end up fighting everyone?… scary thought, isn’t it?” she seemed so sad and didn’t say a word.
Squall didn’t reply but told himself steadfastly that he’d be Rinoa’s knight even if she ended up as the world’s enemy.
“If I fall under control again, SeeD will come kill me, right? And the leader of SeeD is you, Squall…” she said,” Squall’s sword will pierce my heart…I guess it’s ok if it’s you, Squall. Nobody else. If that ever happens…”
“That’s enough!” he interrupted her,” I’ll never do anything like that. The sorceress I’m after is not you, Rinoa. My enemy is the sorceress from the future, Ultimecia.”
“But she lives in the future and possesses me, she uses my body as her extension in this world! How? How will you save me?”
“I’ll come up with something, there’s gotta be a way. Don’t worry, trust me.”
“I trust you. But before you find a way, maybe I should stay in the Sorceress Memorial, wouldn’t that be better?”
“No, that’s pointless, I’ll just come after you again… Rinoa…just stay close to me.”
“Oh…those words!”
“What?”
“That’s what started everything…” she smiled, “can I tell you a story? I had a dream, a scary one. We make a promise, we promise to see shooting stars together. I get dressed up and put on your ring. But the thing is, I can’t remember where I supposed to meet you…I start to panic, I really want to see you, Squall. But I don’t know where to go. I start running through mountains, desert, plains…through Timber, Balamb and Galbadia…when I realize I can’t run any longer, I…I just want to see you so badly…so I scream ‘ Squall, where are you?!’ Then I woke up, I was crying…” she paused for a little while and continue,” I’m sorry, you don’t have to say anything. I just feel like I had to tell you…”
“That was just a dream…it doesn’t mean anything. Don’t worry about it.”
“I guess you’re right.”
……
“How about this?” said him,” I’ll be here…”
“…Why?” asked her.
“The reason why you couldn’t find me was because we haven’t promised yet.”
“Promised?”
“I’ll be waiting for you, if you come here, you’ll find me, I promise.” He said this with his eyes fixed upon hers.
“I’ll be here too, it’s a promise! Thanks, Squall, next time we’ll meet for sure!” She smiled, full of joy.
They had gone through all the ups and downs together, which they’d never make it without each other. Although at the beginning, Squall kept detached from others, Rinoa had forced into his world no matter how many walls he had built around him, and he had surely fallen deeply into Rinoa. I guess in fact, Squall’s cold heart may have always been searching for something tender to be warmed, although he may not notice it, until he found Rinoa, who simply has the power of influence, which could change the surrounding around him, and made everything different. He had learnt how to get alone with others and show his emotions, and had finally learnt the feeling of being deep anxiety for a person, which he had never ever felt before.
